Talisman 1963 FJ

  • The Talisman was built in Sydney by Cliff Trefrey, who was a lifelong friend of Ron Tauranac. The car  was modelled on the Brabham MRD. Although Cliff started building the car before Ron left for England, it first ran in 1963. The car only competed for a few years as the formulas rapidly changed during that period.
  • The very early history is not that documented, but the car was stripped for parts then rebuilt in the late 1980’s, with some alterations or modification. When I bought it the rear section seemed to be incorrect (and had failed repeatedly). The roll hoop was very flimsy, with many alterations; and could not be made safe. The front section appeared to be correct; very like the MRD.
  • I had the rear section rebuilt professionally to resemble an MRD, and locally strengthened to allow a certified roll hoop and stay to be installed.  The roll hoop is detachable and can be raised slightly if a little more height is required, and is certified as such.
  • The car has very early Brabham front wheels, and early 1960’s rear wheels. It now has the correct very early Brabham rear uprights and correct early style Girling calipers all round.
  • The previous owner had an early model Richardson head fitted, but did not upgrade the exhaust system which looked like a F/Ford one gone wrong. When I bought the car I found that the engine was badly damaged, so I was forced to have it rebuilt. It now has an older Holbay crank, Aus’ conrods and pistons, and new locally made inlet manifold and exhaust system.
  • The car has alloy bodywork, but the front section had been damaged/repaired too often. I managed to find a panel beater who could restore the front section, but he said that any further damage would mean a new one would have to be made. So I had a mould made, and the car now has a fibreglass front section. The mould, with the original alloy front body section in it, goes with the car.
  • The car came with a VW transaxle and inboard drum brakes and poor half shafts and uprights, but is now fitted with an early Hewland transaxle, with outboard disk brakes on the correct uprights. The fuel tank was poorly made, so I had a new one made, which works well. The builder was of smaller stature, as was the last owner, so the cockpit was very cramped. I fitted a new Brabham seat, the small new tank, and a medium size detachable steering wheel.
  • I have an MSNZ “COD” and log book for the car, and a NZ Vintage Car Club “VIC” identity card so it can run in MSNZ and VCC historic events. It has a heap of documentation/paperwork which goes with the car
  • At the recent Manfield Classic/Historic meeting the car went very well, and won the FJ section of the last FF/FJ race in rather damp conditions.

Lola Mk 2

  • 1960 Lola Mk 2 – Chassis #BRJ3
  • Fitzwilliam Racing car for 1959 / 1960 / 1961.  One of three successful team cars.
  • Cambridge Racing car from 1961 until late 1962.
  • Purchased by Phil Kerr (Brabham mechanic), exported to New Zealand where it competed in the 1963 New Zealand Grand Prix finishing in 4th place.  (Reference “Historic Racing Cars of New Zealand” by Vercoe).
  • Vehicle was then sold to Ken Smith (Morrie Smith was Ken’s father) and Morrie competed in the 1964 New Zealand Grand Prix.  DNF due to engine failure.
  • Dennis Simonds was next to own the vehicle, purchasing it in 1965.
  • Spinner Black was the next owner, and it is believed he raced it as some kind of a sports car by suspending additional body work along the sides of the vehicle between the front and rea wheels (very resourceful those Kiwi’s).
  • Mike Ross took charge of the vehicle sometime in the 1970s before being sold back to Ken Smith in the mid-1970s.  The car stayed here until it was sold to Matt Carroll in 1978.
  • Matt Carroll of Australia purchased the car in 1978.  Matt Carroll competed regularly in this car in Australia since 1980 and the vehicle was issued an Australian CAMS Log Book since 1980.

Lotus 22

  • The car was bought in 2000 by Kevin Whittle from a seller in Germany where it had been advertised as a Lotus 61. Kevin soon realised it was not a Lotus 61 chassis. Peter Denty and Alan Putt confirmed it was in fact a Lotus 22 chassis that had been modified to take Lotus 61 components and bodywork. Correspondence relating to this is included in the documents file.
  • Kevin Whittle subsequently had the car rebuilt to Lotus 22 specs and FIA papers issued for it.
  • It went through a couple of further hands before I bought it from an auction house in October 2022 and soon realised it required a major rebuild.
  • James Denty completely stripped the chassis, installed a roll over bar to the latest specification, re powder coated the chassis and refurbished/replaced all components. Sliding spline driveshafts have been fitted in place of doughnuts as now allowed by the FIA. The bodywork was repaired and repainted.
  • Engine fully rebuilt by Jeremy Bennett at Nemesis Racing including a new Richardson cylinder head, new pistons, con rods, valve train etc.
  • Hewland 5 speed gear box fully rebuilt by Tony Wilson including a new crown wheel and pinion amongst the many other new parts required.
  • On completion James Denty gave the car a shakedown at Snetterton in early November 2024.
