Lotus 20

  • This Lotus 20 was built in 1961, Jim Russell was the first owner. The car was built up by Frank Gardner at Downham Common Garage London in UK for Jim Russell Racing Driver School.
  • Sold to Jon Leighton  in 1961, it was built up to be used in the UK several times before being imported to Australia used at Jon’s Birchwood Racing School in Victoria.
  • It was sold to Neville McKay from Victoria. He rebuilt and raced the vehicle from January 1962 to December 1963 in red colour.
  • Sold to Alf Costanzo  from Victoria in December 1963, during his ownership he painted it green and fitted front and rear disc brakes. The rear suspension was modified and the Renault gearbox was replaced by a VW close-ratio gearbox. Wide wheels were fitted al l round. It was raced very successfully by him till late 1967. (copy of log book application available)
  • Well known adventurer Hans Tholstrup bought the car and had the rear suspension modified by Bob Britten of Renmax. Hans did not get to race the car selling it instead to fund his round Australia solo boat marathon.
  • Noel Barnes from  New South Wales purchased the car in 1969. He rebuilt the car with 1100cc Ford motor, changed the colour to a different green with yellow strip to race Formula 3 regs. It was raced by Noel and later by son, John, in the NSW Formula 3 Championship 1972 which he won. Later fitting 1300cc motor to meet a new class capacity. The front suspension was redesigned b John Joyce of Bowin Design formally Chief designer at Lotus before returning to Australia to build his own cars in Australia. We still have all the original parts if ever needed. John raced the car very successfully taking many category class win and record at circuit, hillclimb events, NSW & Qld.
  • The 1300cc motor was removed and fitted to our other car a Lotus 41 ,now has a different 1600cc motor fitted to make the car complete.
